Paris 2024: Complete List of Indian Athletes Qualified for the Olympics

A comprehensive list of all Indian athletes and teams competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The number of Indian athletes competing at the Olympic Summer Games has significantly grown in recent years.

The Indian contingent at Tokyo 2020 consisted of 124 athletes, the highest the country had sent to the Games. India also won seven medals, its most in a single Olympics, including Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold medal in the men’s javelin throw.

The Indian contingent at the Paris 2024 Olympics will consist of 117 competitors, 70 men and 47 women, competing in 16 sports categories. They’ll compete in 69 events for 95 medals.

Tennis player Rohan Bopanna, 44, is the oldest athlete to represent India in Paris 2024, while swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu, 14, is the youngest contestant. Athletics is the greatest contributor to the Indian contingent, with 29 players.

Trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta received India’s first Paris 2024 quota at the 2022 ISSF World Championships but did not make the final team after national trials. Prithviraj Tondaiman received the quota in the men’s trap event instead.

Indian shooters, in fact, secured quotas in all Olympic shooting categories for the first time.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) also swapped one of the pistol quotas for a women’s trap shooter when Manu Bhaker won the national trials in the women’s 10m air pistol and 25m pistol, freeing up a pistol quota for shotgun events. Shreyasi Singh received the freed up quota and will compete in the women’s trap event.

Rudrankksh Patil, who received a men’s 10m air rifle shooting quota for India during the qualifying round, did not make the final team either. Sandeep Singh assumed his position following the national trials. Similarly, Tilottama Sen, Akhil Sheoran, Mehuli Ghosh, Shriyanka Sadangi, Varun Tomar, and Palak Gulia, who all had quotas in their respective events, were left out.

In sports such as shooting and wrestling, quotas are earned by countries rather than individual competitors. This implies that the athlete who met the quota can be replaced by another in the build up to the Games.

Because National Olympic Committees have exclusive power over the presence of their respective nations at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation in the Paris Games is contingent on their NOC picking them to represent their delegation in Paris 2024.

Meanwhile, race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh became the first Indians to qualify for sports events in Paris 2024.

Four Indian competitors broke the Paris Olympics qualification criteria in the men’s 20km race walk, while one advanced through the global rankings.

However, because each national federation can only send three competitors to the Olympics, Akshdeep Singh, Vikash Singh, and Paramjeet Singh Bisht were chosen over Ram Baboo.

Meanwhile, Priyanka and Akshdeep have gained a quota for India in the marathon race walk mixed relay event, and Suraj will be joining Priyanka in Paris.

Meeting the entrance criterion or obtaining a quota is only one aspect of the Olympic qualification procedure. National Olympic Committees have the last say on who will be named to the NOC squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Murali Sreeshankar met the qualifying level in the men’s long jump but will be unable to travel to Paris due to a knee ailment that has sidelined him for the whole 2024 season.

Jaismine Lamboria recovered India’s boxing quota in the women’s 57kg category during the Olympic qualifications in Bangkok in June, after original quota holder Parveen Hooda, who had earned a spot at the 2023 Asian Games, was suspended for whereabouts violations.
